Overview
There are two options for connecting to SMCC's WiFi networks:
- Onboarding using connect.smccme.edu: SMCC offers a helper app called SecureW2 that will walk you through the necessary steps to connect to eduroam using a certificate rather than a username & password. The certificate is valid for 3 years and if your password changes during those three years your device will stay connected and avoid lockout issues. Your device will also connect to the eduroam network at other colleges and organizations who participate in the federation.
- Directly connecting using your SMCC email and password. This method is slightly less secure than onboarding your device and will stop working if your password is changed for any reason. We recommend that you log in directly only in cases where onboarding is not possible (example: some Chromebooks).
Solution
Onboarding using connect.smccme.edu
To onboard your Android device follow these steps:
1. If you are on the SMCC campuses first connect to the SMCC wireless network. This network is used to either a) onboard devices to eduroam or b) sign onto the network as a guest. If you are not on the SMCC campus you may prepare your device to connect ahead of your arrival by starting with step #2.
2. Open a web browser (usually Chrome) from your Home screen and navigate to http://connect.smccme.edu. Your device may auto-navigate to this site. On this page you will have options to join eduroam, register as a guest, and register a device for the SMCC-Gaming network. Click the button to join eduroam.
This will redirect you to the setup page which is actually located at https://cloud.securew2.com/public/70335/eduroam/
4. Your device is auto-detected as an Android by SecureW2. The Android operating system does not have a standard way to configure wireless profiles so an extra helper app is required. Select the Download button to go to the Google Play Store to install the SecureW2 helper app. If your phone is configured to do so, you may also download the app from the second option of 'Local Server'. This usually requires security exceptions to the operating system as apps installed from other locations than the Google Play Store may not be signed, tested, and secure.
5. You will be sent to the Google Play Store, directly to the SecureW2 JoinNow app. Click Install to download and install the app to your Android smartphone or tablet.
6. Once the app is installed, click the Open button to launch the app.
7. The app will open and automatically download the eduroam network configuraiton based on your IP address. If the app does not automatically get a network profile configuration, switch back to the web browser you used in step 4 and click the JoinNow button to manually pair the configuration profile with the SecureW2 JoinNow app.
8. The configuration will alert you that it needs to open a web browser in order for you to authenticate. Press the Next button to do so.
9. You will be redirected to the SMCC Single Sign On (SSO) page. Sign in with your normal username and password. Note: you can sign in with your username or your username@smccme.edu. Both are accepted and there is no benefit to using one over the other.
10. Once authenticated you will be redirected back to the SecureW2 JoinNow app where the app will enroll a certificate, setup a network profile for the eduroam wireless network, and attempt to connect to the network. The end result should be a pop-up dialog from the app saying the connection was succesful and the eduroam network was joined. Note: users that are setting this network up prior to arrival on campus will not be able to connect until they are in range of a wireless access point broadcasting eduroam.
11. Now that the Android device has successfully connected to the eduroam network we can verify and forget the SMCC-Connect network. This will ensure that the Android device always connects to the eduroam network while on SMCC campuses.
