eduroam - Connecting with a chromeOS device

Overview

There are two options for connecting to SMCC's WiFi networks:

  1. Onboarding using connect.smccme.edu: SMCC offers a helper app called SecureW2 that will walk you through the necessary steps to connect to eduroam using a certificate rather than a username & password. The certificate is valid for 3 years and if your password changes during those three years your device will stay connected and avoid lockout issues. Your device will also connect to the eduroam network at other colleges and organizations who participate in the federation.
  2. Directly connecting using your SMCC email and password. This method is slightly less secure than onboarding your device and will stop working if your password is changed for any reason. We recommend that you log in directly only in cases where onboarding is not possible (example: some Chromebooks).

Solution

Onboarding using connect.smccme.edu

To onboard your ChromeOS device follow these steps:

1. Connect to the SMCC wireless network. This network is used to either a) onboard devices to eduroam or b) sign onto the network as a guest.

2. Open the Chrome web browser and navigate to http://connect.smccme.edu. Your browser may auto-navigate to this site. On this page you will have options to join eduroam, register as a guest, and register a device for the SMCC-Gaming network. Click the button to join eduroam.

3. This page will redirect you to the setup page which is actually located at https://cloud.securew2.com/public/70335/eduroam/

4. Click the Install button when your device is auto-detected by SecureW2. This will open a new browser tab and bring you to the Chrome Web Store where you can add the JoinNow MultiOS extension to the Chrome browser.

5. In the Chrome Web Store click the Add to Chrome button to add the extension. Click Add extension when the confirmation pop up that says Add “JoinNow MultiOS”?

6. Return to the SecureW2 tab that is titled Southern Maine Community College.

7. Click the sign in button.

8. You will be redirected to the SMCC Single Sign On (SSO) page. Sign in with your normal username and password.

9. Once authenticated, you will be redirected back to the SecureW2 tab in your browser. Click the download button to download the ONC Configuration file to your device.

10. After you click the download button, another new browser tab will open. You will need to click on this tab titled chrome://net-internals/#chromeos.

11. Click on the choose file button.

12. In the My files window that pops up select the file named secureW2.onc and click open

The page will continue to show "No file chosen". This is expected behavior and is OK.

13. Restart the Chromebook.

14. Return to available wireless networks and connect to the network named eduroam. A join Wi-Fi network pop up box will appear.

15. Keep all settings as their defaults unless the EAP method is set to something other than EAP-TLS. If EAP-TLS is not selected, select it from the dropdown menu.

16. You will see the User Certificate field filled with Southern Maine Community College Device Intermediate CA [yourusername@smccme.edu] and the Identity field filled with your email address.

Tip: If you have a large number of certificates to pick from, you can delete excess ones by going to Settings and searching for "manage certificates".

Click the connect button.

17. You have successfully connected to the eduroam network.

Important: You should forget the SMCC: Start Here network by following the steps below. Otherwise your device will try to reconnect to SMCC and will not work correctly.

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings gear icon
  3. In the "Network" section, select Wi-Fi.
  4. Select Known networks.
  5. Find the network you want to forget, then select More > Forget.
